The Weatherford Christian School Lions opened district play with a 45-0 mercy-rule victory Friday, Oct. 2, at Denton Calvary.

The  game ended in the third quarter once the Lions scored  two touchdowns after halftime.

Jack Muhlenkamp threw for 121 yards and three touchdowns. Alex Schoeppner led the team with 56 yards rushing while running for one touchdown and catching another. Ridge Robinson and Pierson Julian also ran for touchdowns each. Julian also threw one 30-yard touchdown to Wyatt Jones. Jace Kelson led the team with four catches for 55 yards and two touchdowns.

On defense, Muhlenkamp had two interceptions while Kelson blocked a punt for a safety.

Weatherford Christian coach Colt Jones praised his team’s defense.

“Our defense was the story of the night,” Jones said. “We pitched a shutout and kept pressure on their quarterback the whole game. That pressure caused a lot of incompletions and set up two interceptions by Jack Muhlenkamp.”

The Lions record improves to 4-2 (1-0 in district). WCS is scheduled to play a non-district game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Lometa.

Lady Lions beat Burton twice

The Weatherford Christian School volleyball team hosted Burton Adventist Academy on Tuesday, Oct. 6, in a double-header.

The Lady Lions won both matches by scores of 3-1.

The first match, a continuation of a match that was started Sept. 10, saw WCS lose 25-17 before rebounding to win the next three sets 25-20, 25-16, 25-14.

The reason two matches were played is because when the teams first met Sept. 10 at Burton, the school gym had recently flooded and the recreation gym the teams where the teams were playing closed at 8 p.m., which paused the match.

The second match the Lady Lions again lost the first set 25-23, but were able to bounce back, winning with the scores 25-20, 25-17, 25-18.

On Thursday, Oct. 1, WCS played at Abilene Christian. The Lady Panthers won 3-0 with set scores of 25-7, 25-8, 25-12.

The Lady Lions are scheduled to play at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, at Nazarene.
