WCS Cross country competes one last time before state

The Weatherford Christian School cross country team ran at the Brad Lutz Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 17, at North Lakes Park.

The Lions finished 10th overall in a race that covered 3,200 meters instead of the usual 5,000 meters.

Jack Muhlenkamp was the top runner for WCS, finishing in 11th place with a time of 10 minutes, 47 seconds. The Lions’ top five runners also included Owen Thompson (82nd), Liam Slade (92nd), Eli Vanzant (103rd) and Gavin Slade (104th).

The one girl runner, Evelyn Woody, earned eighth overall with a time of 12:54.

The Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools state meet starts at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco.

“Our top runner, Jack Muhlenkamp, placed sixth (in state) as a freshman last year, but has battled an ongoing injury this season,” Coach Jill Muhlenkamp said. “So we’ll see how he feels and what he can do. I expect Owen Thompson will run well for us. He’s been one of our top runners all season and should be able to position himself to be in the mix at state. Our only girl, Evey Woody, just missed medaling (at state) last year. She will be a top contender this year. The rest of the team has made strong improvement. I expect each runner will improve upon their performance from last year on what is a challenging course in Waco.”

Lady Lions fight through two-game tie-break to earn final playoff spot

The Weatherford Christian School volleyball team took the hard way to earning a playoff spot, but the Lady Lions did it.

The Lady Lions beat both Nazarene Christian Academy 3-1 and Temple 3-0 on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 19-20, to earn the final playoff seed.

WCS first had to get through Nazarene. The first two sets saw the Lady Lions win easily 25-14 and 25-13. WCS then lost Set 3 25-22 but recovered in time to win Set 4 25-17.

Allison Miller led the team with 17 kills.

That set up a match against Temple for the final playoff seed. The Lady Lions again won the first two sets easily with scores of 25-15 and 25-14. The third set was more competitive, but this time WCS was able to close the match, winning 25-22 to secure the victory.

Miller again led the team with 13 kills.

WCS coach Johnathan Foreman said he was proud of his team for earning the victory against Temple.

“We have been stressing mental toughness all year,” Foreman said. “We beat a good team with a great player in three sets and showed a lot of mental toughness. Our seniors have done a great job of leading this effort.”

The Lady Lions’ bi-district match was played Thursday, Oct. 22, against El Paso Catholic.
