TCA dominates in area championship

Next stop for 4th ranked Lady Eagles is Fort Worth against Dallas Christian

The hometown bleachers were packed, and the Trinity Christian Academy Eagles girls basketball team did not disappoint. In fact, they brought the crowd to its feet several times en route to a 65-28 area-round playoff victory over Prince of Peace.

Although Prince of Peace scored the first bucket, the game was never close after the teams were tied at 7 in the first quarter. From there the Lady Eagles simply out-hustled and outperformed their visiting opponent.

Freshman Emily Ickert got the scoring started for the Eagles with a three-pointer, and went on to lead all scorers with 18 points, including four three-pointers. Fellow freshman Sadie Gough added to the opening scoring with a drive up the lane, Giuliana Marcantonio stole a pass and scored, and Meghan Young popped a three-pointer and the Eagles never looked back, scoring 12 straight points to go up 19-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Prince of Peace almost stayed equal with TCA in the second quarter, but went to the locker room behind 13 points, 33-20, at the half.

Things got even worse for the visiting team as they could only muster four points in each of the last two quarters, while Young got hot from outside the three-point circle late in the game.

“They're just such a good group,” Coach Matt Garnett said after the game.”Yesterday in practice they worked so hard. They've just bought into being really tough. They prepare well, and then, you know, we talk about having the courage to be really aggressive. They're a special group.”

The Lady Eagles will next face Dallas Christian at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Fort Worth Christian in the Regional Quarter Finals.
