Eagles fall to Lake Country

Drop district opener

Posted

Lake Country Christian School kicked visiting Willow Park Trinity Christian out of the nest in the Eagle-versus-Eagle Showdown on Friday, Oct. 6.

Trinity Christian Academy’s varsity football record for the 2023 season moved to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools Division III District 1.

Trailing 16-0 midway through the second quarter, TCA mounted the first significant offensive drive of the game as quarterback Braxton Smith took the snap on a second-and-8 from their own 35. As he dropped back to pass, the internal clock ticking in his head signaled it was time to go as Smith escaped the pocket before finding space in the defensive coverage. He scampered for a gain of 42 yards before being brought down just outside of the red zone, giving Trinity a fresh set of downs.

Four plays later, facing a fourth-and-13 situation from the LCCS 26, Smith threw a strike down the middle of the field to Jake Anderson, who found a seam and ran it in for the score on the 26-yard pitch and catch for TCA. Following the extra point, LCCS held just a 16-7 advantage.

With the game well in hand for the hosting LCCS Eagles, TCA did what TCA does - they continued to fight.

Down 50-7 with the third quarter drawing to a close, the offense once again showed signs of life. On the first play of the possession, Smith picked up 14 yards on a quarterback keeper before being tackled out of bounds at the 49-yard line.

Three plays later the Eagles faced a third-and-15 from their own 45. Smith connected with Matthew Sykes to pick up the necessary yardage for TCA to move the chains and keep the drive alive.

TCA capped off the drive with the old-fashioned Braxton-Braxton connection, as Smith found Lewis wide open in the end zone from 26 yards out for the Eagles second score of the game.

Riley McCracken managed to add a field goal for TCA before the end of the game to produce the final score.

TCA will be on the road once again on Saturday, Oct. 14 as they take on the Lions of Grace Prep (2-4 overall, 0-0 in league) in Arlington. Kickoff for that game is slated for 1 p.m.
