Aledo senior golfer Braylon Mahanay will once again compete at the Class 5A State Golf Tournament this year after qualifying at the Region 1 Tournament in Lubbock Wednesday and Thursday, April 19-20.

Mahanay had two rounds totaling 149 on the Rawls Golf Course. He was the individual leader after the first day, shooting a 2-under-par 70 and followed with a 79.

Mahanay was tied for third overall. However, his score was the lowest among golfers not on state qualifying teams.

The top three teams and the top three individuals not on those teams qualified for state.

Sharing low medalist honors were Blake Keen of Burleson Centennial and Gavin Lane of Argyle, each finishing with a 144.

The state tournament is May 22-23 at the White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown.

Mahanay will compete solo at state as the Bearcats missed qualifying as a team by the narrowest of margins. Their two-day score of 628 (311-317) on the Rawls Golf Course left them in fourth place, one stroke behind third-place Lubbock Cooper (305-322).

Argyle, back-to-back state champions in Class 4A before moving up this season, won the regional tournament, shooting 605 (314-291), followed by Burleson Centennial at 625 (310-315).

“The region was tough and, unfortunately, we didn’t get out. I thought the kids played well under some tough conditions,” coach Brian Mourning said.

Day 1 conditions saw the winds gusting up to 40 mph on the back nine. Despite that, the Bearcats were very much in the hunt, just six strokes off the lead and tied for third.

“The field was tough, but we had a few holes that got away from us coming down the stretch,” Mourning said. “Give credit to Cooper, Centennial and Argyle who played well down the stretch. We will be back next year and use this as an opportunity to grow from and motivate us to get it done next year.

“Braylan has been our anchor all year and the work he puts in is finally paying off for him. Happy to see him get a shot at a medal down in Georgetown. We have a lot of great talent at the 5A level, but he can compete and play with the best of them. I’m excited to see him get after it down there.”

Also for the Bearcats, senior Dylan Kiser shot 157 (77-80), junior Jett Moore posted a 160 (81-79), while sophomore Helton Mossiello (87-79) and freshman Grayson Freeman (83-83) each came in with a 166.

The four lowest scores each round comprise the team score.

The Bearcats won the District 5-5A championship alongside the Ladycats, who did qualify for state earlier in the week.
