Mach I athletes compete in AAU Qualifiers

Five members of the Mach I Track Club in Weatherford competed in a pair of Southwest Regional qualifying meets recently, one for the Amateur Athletic Union at Chisholm Trail High School in Fort Worth and another for the United States Track and Field in Springtown recently.

The top eight finishers in each event at each meet qualified for regionals. For AAU that is back at Chisholm Trail June 27-30 and for USATF it is July 4-6 in Seguin.

In all, Mach I qualified 10 athletes for regionals, five to AAU and five to USATF.

From those regional meets, the top five in each event will move on to nationals. AAU will hold its Junior Olympics at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, North Carolina July 29-Aug. 3 and USATF will be in Bryan-College Station July 22-28.

Chisholm Trail

The performances at Chisholm Trail featured three gold medal winners, along with a pair of silver medals.

Leading the club was Jack Fink, who captured a pair of gold medals in the Boys 17-18 division. He won the 1500-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 17.50 seconds and was the top finisher in the 3000, clocking a 9:19.90.

His younger brother, Jack Fink, won the 3000 race walk in the Boys 13-14 division, posting a time of 20:16.85.

Emmy Strathmeyer also brought home a gold medal, taking first place in the 3000 in the Girls 15-16 category, clocking an 11:42.52. She was also second in the 1500 with a time of 5:21.87 and eighth in the 800 in 2:35.48.

In the Girls 9-10 competition, Jenna Fink placed second in the 1500 with a 6:53.73 and was fourth in the 800 at 3:12.91.

Malachi Wilson took seventh place in the Boys 17-18 age group in the 3000 with a time of 10:56.30.

Springtown

Malachi Dolan, Layton Ybarra and Bodee Cato paced the qualifiers by taking fourth place in their respective age groups. Dolan ran in the Boys 9-10 division and clocked a 5:57 in the 1500, while Ybarra had a time of 4:18 in the Boys 15-16 category in the same event. Cato ran a 10:42 in the Boys 17-18 3000.

Two fifth-place finishes were recorded in the Boys 11-12 division by Tryg Marshall. He ran a time of 11:59 in the 3000 and a 5:20 in the 1500 to advance in both events.

Cole Bettger captured the eighth spot in the Boys 15-16 3000, posting a 10:15.
