Aledo’s varsity hoops squad picked up their first district win of the season on Tuesday, Jan. 9, with a dominant 56-31 win over Azle. The Bearcats (12-9 overall, 1-2 in District 5-5A) bounced back against the Hornets following a 50-31 defeat to Brewer on Friday, Jan. 5.
Controlling the action at both ends of the floor, the Bearcats wasted no time jumping out to a healthy lead as the game got underway. Joaquin Pacheco and Jackson Todd worked the ball around the perimeter while Jack Sawyer took care of business down in the paint. The trio led Aledo to a 20-2 lead by the end of the first quarter as they mixed up their offensive attack.
In the second quarter, Todd and Pacheco continued to lead the charge for the Bearcat offense. The duo combined for 14 of Aledo’s 19 second-quarter points as the Bearcats went into the break at halftime with the game in hand, 39-7.
When play resumed in the third quarter, it was much the same. Aledo’s defense eased up on the Hornets a touch, but the offense created opportunities to score almost at will. In total, five Bearcats contributed to the scoring onslaught to start the second half as Aledo took a 56-17 advantage into the final stanza.
Aledo coasted through the final quarter with the outcome all but decided to pick up their first district win of the season.
Next up on the schedule, the Bearcats will head to Granbury on Friday, Jan. 12, as they look to plunder the Pirates and earn their second district win of the year. Tip-off for that game is slated for 7:30 pm.
