Swimcats qualify for regionals

Roberson, Lane bring home gold

Posted

Led by gold medal performances from Haley Roberson and Porter Lane, Aledo will have a solid contingent representing the program in the upcoming Class 5A Region II Meet in Mansfield Feb. 9-10.

Roberson paced the Ladycats, winning gold medals in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 12.82 seconds, along with the 500 freestyle in 5:20.73. Lane won the boys 100 butterfly, clocking a time of 51.57 seconds.

In addition, Lane captured a silver medal in the 100 breaststroke, posting a time of 59.17. He was .04 seconds shy of a school record.

In all, seven Ladycats and eight Bearcats will be competing for a berth at the University Interscholastic League State Meet Feb. 23-24 at the University of Texas in Austin. Along with competing in 14 individual events (6 girls, 8 boys), the girls and the boys will each have three relays working to advance.

The top six finishers in each event at district qualified for regionals. From there, the top two in each event qualify, along with the next eight fastest in each event from across all eight regions.

As a team, the Ladycats and Bearcats each finished third.

“We had some really strong swims and some races that surprised us with how well they placed,” coach Meghan Roberson said. “Both Northwest and Granbury really gave us a good fight and some fast races. It will be fun to see how we stack up against them at regionals.”

The Ladycats have qualified a 200 medley relay for state each of the past two years, while the girls 200 free relay is looking for a return, along with the boys 200 medley relay.

Individually, Roberson is seeking a three-peat in reaching state in the 200 individual medley and the 500 free. A junior, she has not failed to reach state in her high school career.

Crews is looking to return to state for a second straight season individually and has qualified on relays the past two seasons. Like Roberson, she has been a regular at state throughout her high school career.

Lane looks to make his individual state debut this season after qualifying on the relay in 2023.

In all, Roberson, Crews, Lane, Corah Satterfield and Brayden DeBoer qualified for regionals in four events.

Aledo has qualified swimmers for state each of the past eight seasons.
