The Trinity Christian Academy Lady Eagles saw their volleyball season end in heartbreaking fashion at the hands of Lake Country Christian in five sets Tuesday, Oct. 27, in the area round played at Azle High School.

The set winners were back-and-forth. Lake Country Christian won the first set 25-23 and the third set 25-18. Trinity Christian won the second set 25-22 and the fourth set 25-19.

Lake Country Christian won the decisive fifth set 15-13.

The first set was tightly contested from start to finish, with neither team leading by more than four points. Trinity Christian took a 19-16 lead into a Lake Country Christian timeout. LCC regained the lead, going up 21-20, as TCA called a timeout. From there, Lake Country Christian outscored Trinity Christian 4-3 to win the first set.

Trinity Christian started off the second set with a 5-1 run. By the time TCA led 18-17 at the first timeout, the lead had changed six times. Lake Country Christian scored two points out of the timeout to take a 19-18 lead and led 22-20 at TCA’s first timeout. Trinity Christian then scored five straight points to win the set.

TCA trailed Set 3 early at 7-3, but a 9-4 run headlined by two kills from outside-hitter Isabel Coates allowed the Lady Eagles to gain the lead at 12-11. LCC scored four consecutive points to open up a 15-12 lead at the first Trinity Christian timeout, led 22-14 at the second, and finished off the set with an attack to win 25-18.

In the fourth set, Trinity Christian trailed 13-7 at the first timeout, but three straight points kickstarted by a kill by outside-hitter Paisley James cut the lead to 13-10. The Lady Eagles took a 16-15 lead into the timeout from a Lake Country Christian hitting error and went on a 9-4 run to end the set. Middle-hitter Taylor Gilliam’s kill won the set for the Lady Eagles and forced a fifth set.

Trinity Christian started the fifth set with three straight points, but Lake Country Christian took the lead at 6-5 at the first timeout and led 11-9 at the second. James’ kill was the first point after the timeout to cut the lead to one point. The Lady Eagles tied the score at 13 following a Lake Country Christian hitting error but allowed two consecutive points afterwards to end the match.

Despite the loss, Trinity Christian head coach Dora Sigala praised her team for their accomplishments this season.

“We surprised a lot of teams in our district,” Sigala said. “We definitely fought with all of our heart with everything that we had and left it all out on the court. We’re still a young team, and we’re just getting started. There’s a bright future ahead of us.”

Sigala emphasized the team’s youth on what could help them build from this season into next season.

“We’re a young team, and we will continue to work hard,” Sigala said. “It’s a good spot to start off of. The momentum’s definitely gonna be there. We’re only going to lose two seniors, so we’re just going to keep on grinding and working.”
