Kangaroo Relays

Aledo teams open strong

Posted

The Aledo Bearcats and Ladycats are - if you’ll pardon the punl - are once again expected to go far this track and field season. However, this past week they only traveled a few miles down the road to compete in the Weatherford Kangaroo Relays on Thursday, Feb. 15.

The Bearcats won the boys competition with 178 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Euless Trinity with 95 and third-place Weatherford with 91. The Ladycats had a bit closer of a battle, but still took the top spot with 135 points, followed by Trinity with 129.25.

For the Bearcats it was their 15th consecutive team championship in a regular-season meet dating to the 2021 season.

The Ladycats were led by Sofia Brandenburg with a pair of individual gold medals in the 800-meter and 1600 runs, while Savannah Thompson won gold in the 100 hurdles. The Ladycats also won the 400 relay with Mykel Murry, Mayden Mitchell, Brandenburg and Addison Smith.

Lauren St. Peters doubled up on gold in the shot put and discus, Taylor McKenzie won the high jump and the Ladycats went 1-2-3 in the pole vault with Taylor Hindman, Maggie Kilburn and Claire Campbell.

The Bearcats won two relays, the 400 with Adrian Adam Averett, Jayton Owens and Aven Lawrence, and the 1600 with the same foursome. Bradley Campbell and Evan Murdock finished third and third in the pole vault and Carson Dempsey won the discus.

The Bearcats and Ladycats will compete in the Keller Falcon Fast Invitational in Keller on Feb. 24.
