Bearcats first, Ladycats second at Weatherford

Posted

The 2023 high school track is officially underway and the Aledo boys and girls wasted no time in establishing themselves as teams to beat.

In fact, no one did defeat the Bearcats, who won the Kangaroo Relays at Weatherford’s Kangaroo Stadium on Feb. 16. Meanwhile, the Ladycats placed second in the girls varsity division.

The Bearcats scored 141 points to edge South Grand Prairie with 124, while host Weatherford was seventh with 43. SGP won the girls varsity with 183 points, followed by Aledo with 104, Euless Trinity with 95, and Weatherford with 64.

The Bearcats also won the boys JV division, scoring 125 points to 97 for runner-up Haltom and Weatherford tied Euless Trinity for third with 88 each. The Ladycats were fourth in JV competition with 87 points, with Cleburne winning with 147, followed by SGP with 129 and Weatherford with 102.

“Kids ran great! I was worried about the first meet because of the whole week off due to ice the week before, but the kids showed up and competed and that is all we can ask of them,” said first-year Bearcats head coach Andrew Clark. “The relays recorded some really low times for this time of year compared to the previous years, and we aren't at full strength yet due to runners still in other sports, battling injury, or just not in shape yet.

“I am hoping to see the times drop as we continue to work and get in shape. We also had a great showing from the pole vaulters as well as the distance guys. We run at Haltom Thursday, and we will have all events competing looking to bring home another first-place trophy in both divisions.”

Ladycats coach Mike Pinkerton said of his team, “Not bad, all things considered. Girls competed very well. We did not participate in the field events or 3200 meters last week, but will make up for that this week.”

Vincent Luffey won a pair of gold medals for the varsity Bearcats in the 800 and 1600 races, as did Evan Thompson in the 110 and 300 hurdles. Sean Gribble captured the top spot in the pole vault and Aledo won all three relays (400, 800 and 1600).

Weatherford’s Kellen Jones won a gold medal in the 3200, the Kangaroos’ lone top finish.

For the Ladycats varsity, Sofia Brandenburg won the 800, Molly Garrison captured the 1600 and Sarah Tillotson was first in the 300 hurdles. The Ladycats also won the 1600 relay.

Victoria Kouroma won Weatherford’s lone gold medal, winning the 100 hurdles.
