Aledo gets first win

Extends district win streak to 104

The Aledo Bearcats rebounded after a 0-2 start to the season with a dominant performance Thursday night, Sept. 8, against the Northwest Texans, winning 49-20. Aledo’s schedule to start the season was one of the hardest that they have had in several years.

Not only did Coach Tim Buchanan’s team bounce back from an 0-2 start, but they also made a statement that Aledo isn’t going anywhere, and you better bring your “A” game when you come to play the Bearcats!

The Bearcats scored 28 points in the first quarter thanks to some big plays on defense and a huge break-out game from Hawk Patrick-Daniels.

Aledo’s first drive was extremely impressive. They looked sharp with great blocking by the offensive line giving quarterback Hauss Hejny plenty off time to look for receivers and giving Hawk big holes to run through.

The Bearcats scored 21 points in less than a minute to open the game. They scored when Hawk took the handoff and went one yard for the first score. Aledo recovered the fumbled kick at the 12 and Hawk took it in for 14-0 lead with 7:06 remaining in the first quarter.

After the Texans’ drive stalled, Hejny found Jalen Pope for a 31-yard touchdown pass. Aledo 21-0 with 6:51 remaining in the first quarter.

The Bearcats’ defense held their ground again and forced the Texans to punt again. This time Hawk took the handoff and went around to the right side 54 yards for his third touchdown in the first quarter to give Aledo a 28-0 lead.

Given a 28-0 lead, the Aledo defense went to work. They played aggressive and continued to apply pressure with gang tackling and stopping the Texans’ opportunities to get even close to the end zone.

It got even worse for the Texans just three minutes into the second quarter when Hejny found Tyson Timms for Aledo’s fifth touchdown in less than 13 minutes to take a 35-0 lead.

Once again, the Bearcat defense denied the Texans any chance to put together a scoring drive and Aledo had the ball with less than five minutes left before halftime. When something is working well, you keep using that formula. Thursday night, Hawk Daniels was the problem that the Texans couldn’t solve.

The offensive line again controlled the Texans’ defensive line allowing Hawk to score his fourth touchdown with a two-yard run to give Aledo a 42-0 lead late in the second quarter.

It wouldn’t be fair not to mention that the Texans’ starting quarterback, senior Jake Strong, was unable to play on Thursday. In the previous weeks game, he was holding for the extra point when the PAT was blocked, and he tried to run down the player with the ball and pulled his hamstring.

The Texans did manage to find the end zone with less than two minutes left in the second quarter, but it was a Bearcat lead 42-7 heading into halftime.

The second half of the ballgame was really the opposite of the first half with very little scoring on both sides.

The Texans scored the only points in the third quarter with a Kyle Cummings 13-yard touchdown run to make it Aledo 42, Texans 14 going into the fourth quarter.

Aledo added one more score late in the fourth quarter when Caleb Pope ran 12-yards for the final score for Aledo. Justin fought all the way to the end and did hit paydirt when backup quarterback Leddie Thompson hit Kenan Reil in stride for an 85-yard touchdown to make the final score Aledo 49-20.

Daniels ended up with 17 carries for 150 yards. The Bearcats’ offense accumulated more than 480 total yards. Coach Buc was able to alternate his quarterbacks, and both were very productive. Hauss Hejny was 10 for 14 for 139 yards and one touchdown. Brant Hayden was 8 for 13 for 71 yards and one score and one interception.

Jalen Pope hauled in six passes for 94 yards and one touchdown.

On defense, Davhon Keys had six total tackles and Andrew Parkhurst had five, including one tackle for a loss.

Aledo will host the 0-3 Azle Hornets at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, at Bearcat Stadium. The Community News will continue their live coverage with Bearcat Live on our website.
