Turnovers plague Weatherford in loss at Azle

First meeting in 25 years

Posted

In their first meeting in a quarter century, the Weatherford Kangaroos couldn’t overcome six turnovers, including four first-half fumbles, in a 51-28 loss at Azle on Friday, Sept. 6.

Weatherford out-rushed and out-gained Azle Friday night. But unfortunately, they also had more turnovers than the Hornets, which ultimately cost the Kangaroos the game, 51-28.

As in their week one loss to L.D. Bell, the Kangaroos got off to a poor start at Hornet Stadium. Four lost fumbles in the first half put Weatherford behind the eight ball early.

Also like in the previous week, this game saw a lightning delay which lasted nearly an hour.

The first few possessions were a disaster for both teams. Azle fumbled the opening kickoff, giving Weatherford the ball on the Hornet 34 yard line. But the Roos quickly fumbled themselves, followed by Azle snapping the ball over their punters’ head, with Weatherford recovering at the Hornet six yard line.

Then came yet another Roo fumble.

Azle finally took advantage, marching down the field to take an 8-0 lead, never looking back.

Azle is known as a rushing team, but Weatherford had 343 yards on the ground compared to the Hornets’ 277.

Hornet Hagen Hughes ran for 165 yards on 17 carries with two touchdowns. Azle averaged 7.9 yards a carry for the night.

The Roos were led by Xavier Craven’s 135 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns. Brennen Boehl added 102 yards.

Sophomore quarterback Luke Gray was again efficient for Weatherford, connecting on 20 of 26 passes for 171 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Weatherford dropped to 0-2; Azle improved to 2-0.

The Kangaroos will host the Arlington Colts for Homecoming festivities on Friday, Sept. 13. Azle will have the week off before they start District 3-5A Division I play Sept. 20 at home vs. Denton High.
