Weatherford College’s Trent Sorey finished third at the National Finals Steer Ropin — College Division national championship in Clarendon on Monday, May 27.

The top 18 qualifiers competed in three preliminary rounds. The top 12 returned for the final round and overall championship. Like the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming, the NFSR national championship is based on competitor’s performances at the finals.

Sorey, the defending national champion, led the national standings for most of the season but finished the season ranked third in the nation. Sorey’s times were 14.2 for sixth in round one, 14.2 for sixth in Round 2, 11.5 for third in Round 3, and 11.0 for second in the finals round. His total time of 50.9 on four head was good for third place overall.

Slade Wood (Southwest Texas Junior College) won the national title after roping four steers in 46.8, followed by Chisum Allen (Sul Ross State University) with a time of 49.5. Wood, Allen and Sorey were the only competitors to have qualified runs on four head.

WC’s Catcher Gasperson finished eighth in the nation after tying three steers down in 46.0, and Cash Fretwell finished 11th overall by tying two steers in 25.6.
