The Weatherford College men’s golf team finished in 17th place at the conclusion of the NJCAA Division I National Tournament Friday at Odessa Country Club.

The Coyotes shot 294 as a team Friday, their second best score of the four-day tournament (308-303-292-294). Odessa Country Club is a par-72, 7,260-yard links style course.

“We unfortunately came out flat the first two days, but the guys played solid the second two rounds and didn’t waste shots,” said Jesse Speirs, Weatherford golf coach. “We were 35-over-par the first two rounds and 10-over the last two.”

Weatherford’s Logan Moore finished in a tie for 34th place at 6-over-par (75-77-70-72). Chris Choi tied for 67th at 13-over (78-76-72-75). Gatlin Goad was 70th (75-83-73-71).

“We will learn from this and be better next year,” Speirs said. “I am extremely proud of the work they put into it and making it to the national championship was a great accomplishment. The guys matured as a group and as individuals, and they are setting the standard for the kind of golf that is expected.”

Hutchinson Community College (Kansas) won the national championship, their second in a row.

This was Weatherford’s first season of golf in more than 20 years.

The Coyotes qualified for the national tournament after winning a sudden death playoff over Western Texas College in regional qualifying play.
