The city of Austin has gotten quite familiar with a contingent from Aledo making its way down south about this time of year for the annual University Interscholastic League Swim Meet.
This year the Aledo High School squad will be sending eight competitors (4 girls, 4 boys) to the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center at the University of Texas at Austin. They will compete in the Class 5A Meet Feb. 21-22.
For two members of the group, it will be their fourth consecutive season in which to compete at state, Ladycats Haley Roberson and Victoria Crews. Roberson qualified in four events, two individual and two relays, while Crews is part of both relays following their performance in the Deb. 7-8 Region II Meet in Mansfield.
Roberson will once again compete at state in the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle. She posted a time of 2:07.21 in the former to win by seven seconds by dropping her time by 1.35 seconds since district, along with taking first in the latter by 19 seconds by posting a time of 5:11.18.
Also competing on the 200-yard freestyle and 400 freestyle relays will be junior Julia Gordy, who is making a second straight state appearance, and freshman Mackenzie Oligschlaeger. The quartet won both relays, including the 400 by 11 seconds with a time of 3:45.13, a drop of 11.21 seconds from district.
In the 200 free relay, they set a school record with a clocking of 1:41.57, dropping 4.88 seconds off their district time.
The four boys advancing comprise the 400 free relay that finished second. Senior Tyler Jackson joined sophomores Kale Roberson, Brayden Deboer, and Ian Perez to swim a time of 3:21.60 for a 6.51 improvement from district and another school record.
Also, while not qualifying for state the boys 200 free relay of Kale Roberson, Jackson, Perez and senior Evan Bradley also set a school record of 1:32.22 to place fourth.
“The (boys) 400 free was a race to watch. Splits were almost all best times and they set the school record previously broken in 2009. One of the relay members, Brayden DeBoer, wasn’t born when it was set,” Aledo coach Meghan Roberson said. “They broke it by 5.04 seconds. They led until the final leg when Colleyville Heritage’s anchor swam an incredible last leg to just beat them out.
“I’m incredibly proud of the team and the work they’ve put in this season to get to this point. They’re working hard during practice to be their best for each other in these relays. As a coach and mom with a senior (Haley Roberson) on the team, I’m so glad we’re not done with this season yet!”
