BASEBALL

Coyotes still No. 1

The Weatherford College baseball team remained No. 1 in the National Junior College Association Division I rankings released Monday, March 3.

The Coyote were 15-2 entering the week and were beginning conference play at North Central Texas College in Gainesville at press time.

 

WC’s Brandt leads nation in wins

Weatherford College pitcher Evan Brandt leads the nation in wins according to the latest Division I statistics from the National Junior College Athletic Association.
Brandt, a sophomore from Argyle, is 6-0 in six outings for the No. 1 ranked Coyotes. A group of 11 pitchers tied for second trails him at five wins.
In 33 innings, Brandt has a 1.36 ERA with 28 strikeouts. He has allowed only five earned runs in his six outings.

 

BASKETBALL

WC teams advance to regionals

The Weatherford College Coyotes and Lady Coyotes are playing in the NJCAA Region V Tournament this week at McLennan Community College in Waco. The Coyotes (18-11) finished second in the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference and were playing Midland (21-9), the third-place team from the Western Junior College Athletic Conference.

The Lady Coyotes (20-10) defeated Temple 78-64 at Hill College Monday, March 10, in a game to determine fourth place in the NTJCAC. Enjoying their first 20-win season since 2019-20, WC was playing WJCAC champion New Mexico Junior College (27-2), No. 3 in the nation, at press time.

 

CLAY SHOOTING

TCA shooters stand out

Several shooters from Willow Park Trinity Christian recently competed in a clay shooting competition. Top performers were:

Eli Miller, first in boys JV Skeet and second in boys JV Sporting Clays.

Cameron Smith, second in boys Intermediate Entry Sporting Clays.

Holland Daniels, third in Girls Intermediate Entry Skeet, third in Girls Intermediate Entry Sporting Clays.

Rylie Reeder, third in Girls Varsity Sporting Clays.

 

FOOTBALL

Byrd makes commitment

Tight end Ethan Byrd of the Weatherford Kangaroos has committed to play for Austin College next season.

 

SOCCER

Lady Roos post another shutout

The Weatherford Lady Kangaroos improved to 16-0-2 overall and 9-0-2 in District 3-6A with their 2-0 win at Boswell on March 7. At press time, Weatherford had outscored its opponents 59-1 this season with 17 shutouts and is ranked No. 6 in the state in 6A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.

 

Lady Roos JV B wins district

The Weatherford JV B team defeated Boswell 2-0 to finish 6-0 in District 5-5A and win the league championship. Morgan Banfield scored both goals and the defense posted its 16th shutout.

 

GOLF

Aledo JV teams first, second at Nutcracker

Aledo junior varsity golf teams competed at the Granbury JV Invitational at Nutcracker Golf Club recently. The Bearcats won their division and the Ladycats were second in theirs.

Jack Hagood and Alec Dolman each shot 86 for the Bearcats, with Hagood winning a scorecard playoff for second individually. For the Ladycats, Macy Martinak placed second as medalist with a 90.

 

Lady Roos varsity second in tourney

The Weatherford Lady Roos placed second in the Wilson Boaz Spring Classic at Diamond Oaks Country Club. Ava Cordary was fourth individually.

 

Weatherford teams compete at Glen Rose

The Kangaroos and Lady Roos competed in the Glen Rose Tournament at Squaw Valley Golf Club on Feb. 28-March 1.

The Kangaroos finished 14th out of 28 teams with a 642. Their second round of 308 was the lowest team score in four years.

The boys were led by Carter Bruton with a 149 (79-70) and Madden Ward with a 152 (78-74). Bruton's score was 2 under par.

On the Girls side, Freshman Ava Cordary led the team in scoring with a two-day total of 172 (83-89).

Also, in a tournament at Canyon West on March 10, Bruton shot a 4-under-par 68 for first place individually.

 

SOFTBALL

Ladycats still in top 10

In this week's Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 5A state softball rankings, the Aledo Ladycats are No. 9. At press time they were 12-2.

 

WC moves up in NJCAA rankings

Weatherford College moved up two spots to No. 19 in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association Division I rankings released on Monday, March 3. The Coyotes were 16-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play entering the week.

 

Coyotes’ Hanf honored by league again

For the second consecutive week and third time this season, Weatherford College Coyotes pitcher Sarah Hanf was tapped as the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week. En route for a 3-0 week in the pitcher's circle, she dominated several opposing hitters for the Coyotes. She pitched 18.2 innings, scattered 13 hits and allowed just three earned runs. She struck out 23 and allowed only one walk. She also collected a save in relief.

Hanf is 15-0 this season with 103 strikeouts in 77.1 innings. A freshman from Elk Grove, California, Hanf had a 1.27 ERA entering the week.

 

Lady Roos even in district

The Weatherford Lady Roos (6-8 overall) are 1-1 in District 3-6A with a 16-1 win over Crowley and a 10-0 loss to Mansfield Legacy.

Pitcher Harrison Ray was the Player of the Game against Crowley. She pitched four innings, gave up three hits, one earned run with seven strikeouts and a walk.

 

TENNIS

Weatherford Christian competes at Calvary

The Lady Lions traveled to Denton Calvary recently. Standout performances were by Emory Woodard, Brylee Coomer, Charlsi Bedinger and Olivia Zimmerman.
