With an explosive offense and the pitching of Taylor McKean — who also contributed to the offensive outburst — the Aledo Ladycats once again find themselves advancing deep into the postseason.
The Ladycats (27-3) moved on to the third round by virtue of their 13-2 dismantling of Burleson (22-7) in a single-game Class 5A Division I area (second) round playoff at Saginaw Chisholm Trail High School on Thursday, May 1.
It was the 13th straight win for the Ladycats, who are ranked No. 7 in the state in Class 5A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. They were playing Amarillo (27-8-1) in the third round at press time at Iowa Park High School.
The Ladycats, champions of District 5-5A, began the postseason with a sweep of Colleyville Heritage, 3-0 and 12-1, and have outscored their opponents 28-3 so far in the playoffs. Amarillo, second in 3-5A, comes in with sweeps of Lubbock Cooper and El Paso Chapin in a pair of best-of-three series.
Against Burleson, the runner-up in District 8-5A, McKean pitched five innings before the game was called by mercy rule. She showed little mercy, however, as 13 of the Lady Elks’ 15 outs were strikeouts. She surrendered four hits, a single earned run and walked three.
McKean also contributed a double and RBI at the plate.
The Ladycats offense was led by the trio of Kyleigh Pawlak, Marina Taveras and Tempe Perry with three hits each. Taveras had two triples and two runs batted in, Pawlak had a triple and drove in five runs and Perry doubled with two RBI.
Addie Perry also tripled, along with two walks and a stolen base.
In all, 10 Ladycats reached base and another drove in a run.
