The Parker County Committee on Aging annual Senior Prom and Gala features glamour, gourmet meals, and glitzy garments where members, guests, and volunteers enjoy live big-band entertainment and elegant food. However, the most exquisite perks are reserved for special seniors.
Senior center members 90 years and up are treated to a limousine bus service to the front door, grand introductions into the banquet, best tables in the house in front of the orchestra, and champagne.
Lennie Harmon was first to exit the 90+ limousine for the March 28 event at The Springs Event Venue and declared her V.I.P. treatment was earned because, “I’m going to be 95 this year.”
Other 90+ members of the senior center are Francis and Rosemary Klontz of Aledo, Connie Heath of Weatherford, Betty Halford of Weatherford, and Melvin and Rosie Luther of Weatherford.
Works of art were included among gift baskets, golf packages, and big screen TVs for the silent auction, live auction, and raffles. Senior club member Gayle Hicks donated two works of art, and for the third year supporter Kristen Soble painted a piece live to be auctioned at the end of the event.
“I dabbled in art all my life, but I never had the money to go to school on it,” Hicks said. “I donated some art for the first gala, but I missed the gala last year because I was in the hospital. I paint all the time and I’ve sold several pieces.”
A prom would not be complete without the crowning of a king and queen, and senior center members vote for the royal positions based on participation and service to the group. Francis Klontz was thrilled when he was called to don the ceremonial crown and sash, and it was a bigger surprise when his wife, Rosemary, was chosen to be queen.
After the surprise, Rosemary took the microphone to thank the staff and volunteers.
“You people work so hard for us. This is the best center there is anywhere,” Rosemary said as she held back tears. “This center means the world to us and you make us all feel so special.”
