Prepping students for success

Career fair at the high school

Posted

Approximately 50 career professionals from various fields joined Aledo High School students for a career fair on March 26 to speak with students and introduce new career path options.

The career fair allows the students the opportunity to “Get a feel for different professions…[and] to network and interact with professionals,” said Tricia Hackfeld, counselor.

They were given time during the school day to walk through and make connections with professionals, learning degree/certification requirements, what hiring employers look for, and possible career opportunities.

“[The career fair is] a great way to introduce [us] into a lot of different fields and start [our] journey in high school,” said AHS student Brian Freeman. “It helps [us] see what we want to do after [school].” Freeman is interested in aerospace engineering and took advantage of speaking with engineering professionals at the event.

Weaved throughout the booths at the fair, business categories consist of education, law, trade/specialty, business, medical, military, engineering, aviation, finance, human resources, religion, public service, fine arts, mental health, and agriculture – a variety suited to fit the needs of all students.

Hackfeld said the careers that seem to stand out the most to students are the more “action-packed careers” such as law enforcement and first responders, or “big profile jobs” like the Parker County District Attorney Jeff Swain, who attended the career fair.

Students were given a new opportunity this year. They could sign up for a time slot to learn resume building and practice mock interviews. Here, students meet individually to learn how to put together a resume that will stand out to employers and practice communication skills for future job interviews.

The career fair is held every spring to encourage younger students to think ahead and prepare seniors as graduation is approaching in the upcoming months, allowing them to gather necessary information to set them up for a successful career path.
