Middle school program turning heads

Posted

In just its second year of existence, the Aledo Middle School soccer program is in full swing. Both boys and girls in seventh and eighth grade have been working hard on the pitch in one of the newest additions to Aledo sports.

Derek Vierling, the head soccer coach at Aledo High School, had been trying to get the program launched for just less than a decade. In the past 10 years, middle school soccer has been sweeping across the state of Texas. After the past two years of working out the kinks, Vierling has already established a solid program.

“It has done wonders,” Vierling commented. “Last year Cole [Crawford] scored three goals in their first game, and then he and a few others made the varsity roster as freshmen. Even the girls had a couple of freshmen on varsity. I wouldn’t be surprised if the trend continues and we have a few of this year’s eighth-graders make varsity next year.”

Both boys and girls will face Granbury Middle School starting at 5 p.m. Friday, May 13 at home and close out the season on Monday, May 16 against Azle at 5:30 p.m. The boys will be at home against Azle, while the girls will make the short trip up north. The Black Teams play first, followed by the Orange squads.
