Ladycats topple Lady Texans on the pitch

Posted

Aledo’s Ladycat soccer team improved to 7-4-1 overall (1-1 in district 5-5A) with their 6-1 mauling of the visiting squad from Northwest on Friday, Jan. 27, at Bearcat Stadium.

Aledo took a 4-0 lead into halftime before adding two more goals during a half that saw as many fireworks off the field as on it.

With 36:42 remaining in the match, Ladycat forward Sydney Mcguire was toppled by the Lady Texans goalkeeper. A penalty was called by the referees resulting in a several minute delay as chaos ensued.

The referee who made the call took time to explain his position to a trio of Northwest players while the Lady Texans coach yelled at the referee from the sideline. Once his explanation to the Lady Texan players concluded, the referee took the next several minutes to discuss the matter with the Northwest coaching staff.

When play finally resumed Mcguire drilled home the PK to put the Ladycats up 5-0.

Northwest got on the board with their lone score of the match shortly after Mcguire’s penalty kick to cut the hometown lead to 5-1 with 35:19 left to play. Aledo fired right back, however, as Harper Smith fired a missile from about 60 feet out that sailed just under the crossbar before finding the back of the net. Smith’s goal at the 34:24 mark of the second half concluded the scoring rally for both teams.

“All in all, I thought we played well,” Ladycats head coach Brian Johnson said after the match. “We played everybody. That’s impressive when you can get 22 girls in a game. I was excited with the play of our midfield. When we settled down, found our wings, and played some soccer we looked good.”
