After stringing together back-to-back wins for the first time this season during the Brock Tournament, the Aledo Ladycats basketball squad’s season record dropped to 3-6 after coming up just short on the road in Stephenville on Monday by a 37-35 tally.
Though the Ladycat hoopers trailed during much of the contest, Aledo rallied in the fourth quarter to put up 15 points in the final frame. Unfortunately, time expired on the visiting team’s comeback efforts as the hosting Honeybees managed to hang on and escape with the win.
While Aledo’s record doesn’t reflect where the team would like to be at this juncture in the season, head coach Nikki Hyles feels good about the direction her team is ultimately heading.
“Playing tough teams now will make us better going into district,” Hyles said. “Our district is highly competitive. Playing these tough teams now helps us see where our weaknesses are and what we need to work on heading into district play.”
The Ladycats officially kick off district play on Dec. 13 when they travel to Wichita Falls to take on Rider’s Lady Raiders. In the meantime, Hyles has already identified some key areas her team is working on to improve upon between now and then.
“We’ve got to get better at defense. We also need to get better at scoring around the basket,” she said. “We keep working and those shots will start to fall for us.”
