Ladycats second in district

Posted

It doesn’t take long for sports programs to get good in Aledo. Following that tradition, the Ladycats finished second in district powerlifting on Feb. 18 in Granbury a year after finishing sixth in their inaugural season.

“Tremendous effort by everyone to compete and push themselves. We talked a lot in the last couple of weeks about what everyone would have to do to be successful at this meet and set themselves up to qualify for regionals, and they performed when it mattered,” coach Josh Morgan said.

Azle won the district team championship.

Individually, the Ladycats were led by Taylor Sehnem taking the top spot in the 114-pound division and Avery Gray winning the 259-plus division. Sehnem had a total of 605 pounds in her three qualifying lifts and Gray lifted 790 pounds.

In all, 10 girls scored points for Aledo. Thirteen qualified for the upcoming regional meet.

Taking second in their weight classes were Ari Mathias (148) and Adrianna Lambert (220).

Four Ladycats placed fourth, Lilly Carruthers (97), Hannah Clark (148), Jackie Melendez (165) and Haley Farmer (198). Finishing fifth were Taylor Paetzold (181) and Morgan Sehnem (114).

Also qualifying for regionals were Taylor Hart (123), Charlee Soward (123) and Hannah Good (132).

The regional meet will be March 2 in Sherman. Regionals are independent of districts. To qualify for regionals a lifter has to be in the top 12 in their weight class after all district and other meet results are posted. They can also qualify by getting the “automatic” qualifying total.

The state meet will be in Frisco on March 18. To qualify for state, a lifter has to be in the top two at the regional meet or hit the state automatic total.
