Lady Roo qualifies for state

Senior Rayla Castillo of the Weatherford Lady Kangaroos will be competing at the UIL Class 6A State Cross Country Meet at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock on Nov. 4. She qualified by finishing ninth in the Class 6A Region I Meet in Lubbock on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

Castillo posted a career-best time of 18 minutes, 35.1 seconds over the 5-kilometer course at Mae Simmons Park. This is her first appearance at state after reaching regionals every year in high school.

Castillo was the District 3-6A runner-up on Oct. 13 with a time of 19:03.1.

The top four teams and the top 10 runners not on those teams qualified for state.

As a team, the Lady Roos finished 13th. The Kangaroos were 22nd among the boys.

Also running for the Lady Roos Tuesday were freshman Remi Boone, 80th, 20:17.8; senior Cheyanne Gorman, 91st, 20:35.0; junior Macayla Kopacz, 117th, 21:17.20; freshman Nayella Ordonez, 122nd, 21:24.6; and sophomore Cayleigh Madrid, 148th, 22:07.3.

The Kangaroos were led by sophomore Kelan Bush, who was 110th with a time of 17:24. Also competing were seniors Braxton Boyer (120th, 17:35.5), Rafael Ordonez (133rd, 17:47.8) Kris Martinez (149th, 18:03.3) and Josh Gal (157th, 18:27.6), along with juniors Tristyn Allison (152nd, 18:06.4) and Riley Starling (177th, 20:39.5).

Castillo will run at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 4.
