Stay atop 5-5A standings

Sitting in second place in the District 5-5A standings with three games left to go, Aledo’s Ladycats went into Brewer hoping to hand the Lady Bears their first district loss of the season and take their place atop the standings with the season winding down.

The Lady Bears, however, had other plans. Brewer solidified their place at the top of the standings with a 75-46 mauling of the Ladycats on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

The Ladycats (25-9 overall, 8-2 in district) were outgunned throughout the contest as the Lady Bears took a commanding lead early. Setting a high pace, Brewer jumped out to an eight-point lead in the first frame, 16-8.

Things didn’t improve in the second quarter for Aledo. The home team held the Ladycats at an arm’s reach once again, as Brewer extended their lead to 16 points at the end of the first half, 34-18.

Aledo kept pace with the Lady Bears to start off the second half, as both squads tossed up 19 points in the third quarter. However, Brewer shifted gears in the fourth quarter, running at a pace the Ladycats just could not keep up with. The home team went on a 22-9 run to close out the game, sending the Ladycats back to Aledo still in second place.

With only two games left on the regular season schedule before the start of the postseason, the Ladycats travel to Azle on Friday night to take on the Lady Hornets. Azle currently holds a 4-6 record in district play with a one-game lead over Saginaw for fourth place in the district.

The Ladycats finish off the regular season at home next Tuesday, Feb. 6, against Granbury, which has also clinched a postseason berth.

Presently, Aledo holds a one-game advantage in district play over Granbury. The final two games of the season will be vital to ensuring the Ladycats head into bi-district with the No. 2 seed.

Friday’s matchup in Azle is slated for a 6:15 p.m. start.
