You don't have to look hard at Weatherford College to find Eben Hall. He can be found in lounges, lobbies, classroom halls and offices. In fact the adjunct instructor of art has works hanging all over the campus.
Hall not only has a lot of his art on display, but has been encouraging the display of student artists as well since he came to Weatherford College two years ago.
"When I got here there was, like, no art hanging around the campus," Hall recalled. "That got me excited. This place is like a blank canvas."
Student art hangs in the hallway of the fine art department in the Marjorie Alkek Fine Arts Center, but Hall began seeking out other places to adorn. The instructor took pieces he displayed in a Dallas art gallery, newly created pieces, and works from talented students and began placing them in lounges and lobbies.
Hall's art can be described as minimalist abstract. His work does not abruptly grab the viewer by the eyes but rather encourages close examination.
A 48-inch work in the Italian “linee rosse e grigie” style (red and gray lines) blends hundreds of red, orange, blue and gray one-eighth-inch parallel lines. Another style looks like a square of a rusted bridge truss from afar, but is created by combining oxidizing paint, metal shavings, rock salt and coffee for art that will change tones over the years. A piece hanging in the Emerging Technologies and Workforce Building is made from reclaimed lumber and a wood sign.
"Art has to excite you and make you think," he added.
Hall's work, both on canvas and in person, earned him the 2024 Presidential Service Award presented by Weatherford College President Dr. Tod Farmer, who praised Hall's art around the campus as well as his eagerness to help new students register and become accustomed to campus life.
