With just a few days left until Thanksgiving, Annetta Mayor Sandy Roberts announced a pardon for Gomez the turkey during the most recent town council meeting on Thursday, Nov. 21.
Gomez, as much as a turkey can, was showing signs of relief and thankfulness that he was not going to end up as a delicious dinner for a family. Now, it appears he has the pleasure of a long and happy future.
This was the first time that Roberts has had the opportunity to participate in such an event, which was made official through a proclamation. After the reading of the proclamation, Gomez, the mayor and the entire council had a photo together.
Gomez did not seem excited either way with all of the gala, but being a turkey, who could really tell? However, he was certainly not backing away from all of the attention.
“I believe that Gomez will be able to enjoy this Thanksgiving as well as many to come with this official pardon," Roberts said. "He will be able to rest in his days knowing that he will be safe from winding up as a holiday meal.”
In keeping with the holiday theme, local Toys for Tots representative Rico Remigio stopped by to thank the council for collecting toys in the box located at city hall.
“Everyone is welcome to come and drop off the unwrapped toys here at the office and several locations all around Parker County.” said Remigio.
The event will conclude Dec. 13.
In other action on the evening's short agenda, the council amended the town's electronic communications policy to include a prohibited technology policy. This is in connection with Senate Bill 1893, which prohibits the use of certain social media applications and services on devices owned or leased by governmental entities.
The Town of Annetta’s final meeting of the year is scheduled for Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. at Annetta Town Hall, 450 Thunderhead Ln.
