Team places 13th
In the program’s first national tournament, the Weatherford College women’s golf team took 13th place at NJCAA national championship May 12-15 near Garden City, Kansas. The tournament was played at Buffalo Dunes Golf Club.
WC’s Corrina Haros finished fifth out of 79 golfers, improving from 10th place after the second round. The freshman from Mansfield finished 11 over par with rounds of 75, 75, 72, and 77. Her third round included three birdies.
The Coyotes, ranked No. 11 in the nation at the end of the regular season, shot 329-315-324-326 as a team. No. 2 Odessa College won the national championship by 18 strokes over second place Seminole State College (Florida).
WC finished the season with an all-region honoree (Haros), three first team all-conference players, and the Coach of the Year Award winner (Katie Johnston). This was just the second year for the program.
Coyotes finish 15th at men’s golf nationals
In their first national tournament in three years, the Weatherford College men’s golf team finished in 15th place on Friday, May 16 in Newton, Kansas. The NJCAA Division I National Championship was held May 13-16 at Sand Creek Station Golf Course.
The 15th-place finish is the second-best in program history, behind a 12th-place finish in 1993.
WC had its best day as a team in round three on Thursday, making a 10-stroke improvement from the day before. For the tournament, the Coyotes shot 300-304-294-311 for 1,209 total. They were only two strokes behind the two teams tied for 12th place.
Weatherford’s Dawson Langan and Braylon Mahanay tied for 38th place out of 138 golfers at 13 over par. Langan shot 75-77-72-77 and Mahanay shot 79-74-70-78. Mahanay, an Aledo High School graduate, had the third-best round of the field on Thursday with a 2-under 70.
Abdo Fakori finished 43rd (73-74-75-80).
Midland College won the national championship.
