The district preview tournament was an accurate measure of what was to come as the Aledo Ladycats returned to Cross Timbers Golf Course in Azle and duplicated their accomplishment from a week earlier. They won the District 5-5A championship.
The Ladycats Black team shot a two-day total of 676 (336-340) to take the title over second-place Granbury Purple with a 697 (346-351). The Ladycats Orange was third with a 777 (413-364).
Also qualifying for the Class 5A Region I Tournament April 14-15 at Lake Ridge Country Club in Lubbock April 14-15 was freshman Kennedy Bailey from Aledo Orange. She shot 183 (98-85) and was one of the two medalists to advance.
The top two teams and the top two individuals not on those qualifying teams move on to play at regionals.
Emily Crick of Aledo Black took the top individual honors, shooting 156 (77-79) to win by five strokes over Claire Jordan of Granbury Purple. Kylie Kirkland of Aledo Black was third with a 172 (87-85) and her teammate Sydney Purdon, a freshman, was fourth with a 173 (86-87). Rounding out the scores for the Black team was Harper Price with a 182 (89-93).
Also for Aledo Orange, freshman Sydney Russell shot 192 (107-85), Abby Gray posted a 201 (98-103), Addison Russ shot 205 (110-95) and McKenzie Holman came in with a 215 (116-99).
The four lowest individual scores comprise the team scores for each round.
Playing as a medalist, Layna Satterfield shot 189 (97-92) for Aledo.
“It was a long, windy two days,” Aledo coach Brian Mourning said. “The thing about Cross Timbers is it’s a firm golf course and everything is gonna roll.
“I’m pretty satisfied with how those kids played. They were ready to go. They weren’t gonna lose.”
Mourning praised the 49-stroke improvement of the Orange team from Monday to Tuesday.
“I have two little freshmen who stepped up. As a coach you want your kids to get better each day and we learned from our mistakes,” he said.
Mourning noted the Ladycats are headed into a challenging field at the regional tournament, which will also likely feature winds. Lubbock is famous for its West Texas wind gusts.
“Regionals is going to be tough, I’m not gonna lie,” he said. “Colleyville Heritage and Grapevine have a couple of girls who can shoot in the high sixties, but we’ve got one who can get down there, too, in Emily.”
Other challengers in the field, he added, include Amarillo and Abilene Wylie.
From regionals, the top three teams advance to state, along with the top three individuals. If one of the first three individual finishers is on an advancing team, the next highest ranked individual who is not on an advancing team shall advance. If all three individual finishers are on advancing teams, the next two highest ranked individuals who are not on an advancing team shall advance.
Aledo has had either a team or individual compete at state every season since 2011. Crick was on the girls team that qualified in 2023.
The boys were playing their District 5-5A Tournament at Cross Timbers at press time, weather permitting.
