Makes second appearance in three years

Continuing a tradition that spans more than two decades - before she was even born - Aledo’s Emily Crick competed at the Class 5A State Tournament at Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown Monday and Tuesday, April 28-29.

Crick, a junior, finished with a two-day total of 158, opening the tournament with a 77 and finishing with an 81. She tied for 28th place individually.

It was an 18-stroke improvement from her performance two seasons ago when she was part of the entire Ladycats team that qualified.

“In two years how much she’s grown and matured, and how her golf game has just gotten so much better is amazing,” Aledo coach Brian Mourning said. “She was our No. 1 girl this year and will probably be No. 1 next year.”

Crick’s growth has included winning a District 5-5A individual championship this season after finishing fourth as a freshman and second as a sophomore. She improved from 12th at regionals last season to fifth this season.

Also, the Ladycats have won district all three years she has been on the varsity.

“She had three holes today that got her,” Mourning said. “But she finished strong. I always tell the kids it’s not where you start, it’s where you finish.”

Crick parred the final three holes after running into some trouble on the 15th hole.

“She’s a fighter. She’s not gonna quit,” Mourning said. “A key is learning from your mistakes and I saw a lot of that from her down there.”

With two trips to state in three seasons, Mourning said he believes the best is yet to come from Crick as she prepares for her senior season.

“Everybody down there’s good. You’re going to hit bad shots, but you react says a lot, and I am impressed with how she responded,” Mourning said. “Having that experience and playing with these kids at this high level is only going to help her going forward.

“I’m very much looking forward to seeing what she does next season.”
