Former Aledo Bearcat pole vaulter Zach Davis has been named a second-team NCAA Division I All-American in track and field for the Texas A&M Aggies following his final college performance at the NCAA National Championships in Austin.
Davis, a senior, is no stranger to Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas, having won 5A state championships there in 2018 and 2019. This time, on Thursday, June 8, he cleared 17 feet, 4.5 inches to place 15th.
Davis then attempted but missed all three tries at 17-10.5, which is higher than his personal best of 17-9.5 at the Texas Tech Red Raider Open during the 2023 indoor season. It's the seventh-best indoor vault in Texas A&M history.
During the outdoor season, Davis vaulted 17-8.5 for third place at the SEC Championships, the 10th best outdoor vault ever in school history.
Also in the 2023 outdoor season, Davis won the Island Relays Bahamas, the Victor Lopez Classic at Rice University and the Florida Relays. He was second at the Trojan Invitational at USC and at the LSU Alumni Gold Meet, along with a bronze medal for third at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California.
He qualified for the NCAA Championships by placing 11th at the NCAA West Regionals in Sacramento, California, also with a vault of 17-4.5.
In the 2023 indoor season he won the Tiger Paw Invitational at Clemson. He was also second at the Texas Tech Red Raider open and at the Arkansas Invitational (among collegians), along with fourth at the Razorback Invitational at the University of Arkansas and fifth at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
He was also third in the SEC Indoor Championships, again clearing 17-4.5.
In his college career, Davis had eight victories (4 indoor, 4 outdoor), seven runner-up finishes (3 indoor, 4 outdoor) and six third-place finishes (3 indoor, 3 outdoor).
He also won the SEC Indoor Championships as a junior, clearing 17-3.
