Council receives updates on downtown street rehabilitation

Ringer alley pits renamed to honor Allison

Director of Public Works Chad Marbut gave an update on the Northwest Downtown Weatherford Street Rehabilitation Project at the regular city council meeting on Feb. 13.

Marbut said that the downtown project is right on track with budget and schedule. The project is halfway complete and is expected to be fully completed in mid to late June 2024.

The downtown project was started in late August of 2023 with the construction starting on local storm drain improvements.

As of a few weeks ago, North Elm Street, Texas Drive and East Spring Street are closed due to asphalt removal and replacement. Marbut shared a map showing the closed roads. Sewer lines will also be installed in the next couple of weeks on York Ave.

“Utilities was a huge milestone for us to get over and that's just about been completed,” Marbut said.

Earlier in the  meeting, the council voted to formally change the name of the Noon Lions Ringer Alley pits at Love Street Park to The John Allison Ringer Alley.

This change was recommended by the Weatherford Parks and Recreation Advisory Board due to Allison’s long standing membership to the Ringer Alley for the last 22 years. Jaycob Kirkpatrick, director of the Weatherford parks, recreation and special events, said that Allison over the years has hosted tournaments, sanctioning the pits through the Texas Horseshoe Pitchers Association, and spending hours maintaining the park.

“If you don’t know John Allison, he is a true ringer,” Kirkpatrick said.
