The latest meeting of the Weatherford City Council on Aug. 13 was a time of remembrance for James Milburn Hamilton, who passed away on June 25 in Lubbock. The day of a proclamation in his honor was designated as Aug. 14, which was also his birthday.

Aug. 14 was also the day of his funeral as he is now buried next to his mother, father, and grandparents.

Mayor Paul Paschall said of the evening, “It is a special night here in the city chambers, we are recognizing a special man who we lost but the world truly enjoyed.”

Hamilton was born in Weatherford in 1963 and was a long-time resident. He graduated from Weatherford High School and Weatherford College, returning to teach in the Weatherford School District.

In 2017 he accepted a teaching position in Gonzales, where he also served on the planning and zoning commission and economic development corporation.

Among his many accomplishments, Hamilton was the youngest president of the Weatherford Optimists Club. He also worked in Washington D.C. as an intern, later joining the staff for Democratic Representative Charles Stenholm of Texas.

While in Washington, Hamilton worked hard with Stenholm to preserve Social Security, along with working on veterans affairs and education issues.

Hamilton was a graduate of Howard Payne University with a degree in education. He was also student body president.

He loved being a student so much he decided to become a teacher. He received a full scholarship in choir from Howard Payne University where he received his bachelor’s degree in education. He also served as president of the Student Body at Howard Payne.

He would go on to also earn two master's degrees.

Hamilton and his wife Kelly had a daughter, Ruby Jacqueline.
