After 13 years of service to the City of Aledo, City Secretary Deana McMullen officially retired on Monday, Sept. 30. Current and former members of the city council gathered at the Aledo Community Center prior to the council meeting on Thursday, Sept. 26, to celebrate McMullen’s devotion to the community as an employee, as well as the compassionate friend she has become to so many during her tenure in Aledo.
McMullen came to Aledo in October 2011 by way of the City of Everman where she was the court clerk. At that time, the City of Aledo was in need of an experienced professional who could organize the city office and elevate the level of customer service being offered to residents. Thus began what would become a 13-year journey that allowed her to positively impact every person at the Community Center for her retirement party, and countless others who were unable to attend.
As part of the festivities, Mayor Nick Stanley read a proclamation to officially denote Thursday, Sept. 26, as Deana McMullen Day in the City of Aledo. City Manager Noah Simon surprised McMullen by presenting a placard bearing her name that will be placed in the new Aledo City Hall, naming one of the conference rooms in her honor once construction of the facility is complete.
Following McMullen’s retirement celebration, the council got its scheduled meeting underway. Mayor Pro Tem Nelson Rowls presided over the meeting.
The official business of the meeting was brief, with only two action items on the agenda. The first order of business was a proposed amendment to the Aledo code of ordinances around the issue of fence maintenance. The proposed amendment would permit code enforcement for property maintenance standards across the city as it pertains to broken, or unsightly fencing structures.
The second proposed amendment will help create limitations for parking on public streets.
During the discussion, Simon stated the goal of the amendment is not to ticket residents for short-term parking on city streets, but rather compliance that will keep city streets clear and passable.
Both amendments passed unanimously.
Aledo’s City Council will meet again on Thursday, Oct. 3. On the agenda will likely be presentations regarding delinquent tax collection, the state of the IT infrastructure for the City, and an update on the establishment of the Aledo Police Department. That meeting will take place at the Aledo Community Center starting promptly at 6 p.m.
