Bearcats win own relays, Ladycats second

Weather cuts meet short again

Posted

For a second consecutive week the weather cut short a track and field meet in which Aledo was competing. This time it was their own Bearcat Relays on Wednesday, March 6.

Still, it wasn’t enough to keep the Bearcats from once again winning for an 18th straight regular-season meet. They almost doubled runner-up Northwest, scoring 171.6 points to the Texans’ 91.5.

The Ladycats finished second, scoring 137 to 165 for the Lady Texans. They also got a school record in the shot put as Lauren St. Peters had a throw of 48 feet, 10 inches. St. Peters is seeking a third straight trip to state this season.

The matchups were a preview of what could lie ahead in the District 5-5A Meet, which will also be in Aledo on April 3-4.

“Ran good, times are starting to really drop, gained some depth with the basketball season being over, just have to get them in shape now,” Bearcats coach Andrew Clark said. “Things are coming together for district.”

While the win was convincing for his team, there was at least one canceled event that Clark said he wished could have been completed.

“I wish we could have run the 4x400. Northwest beat us last week at their home meet, I made a few adjustments this week and really thought we could get them back on our home track,” he said. “I guess we will have to wait until district to find out.”

The Bearcats won the two relays that were run, the 4x100-meter and 4x200, beating runner-up (and district foe) Granbury in the former and Northwest in the latter.

As for his team’s performance, Ladycats coach Mike Pinkerton said, “Girls did great – although we still have plenty of room for improvement. All of the girls, varsity and JV, did a great job and competed well. There were many improvements made. We have to continue to work hard, improve, and prepare for district.”

Following spring break, the Bearcats and Ladycats return to competition March 21 in Joshua.
