Bearcats follow Ladycats to district championship

Two AHS teams head to regionals

In what has become a regular thing every spring, the Aledo Bearcats joined the Ladycats in capturing a district championship. A week after the Ladycats won District 5-5A by an eye-popping 105 strokes on the Sugar Tree Golf Course, the Bearcats, albeit the score being a little closer, duplicated the title feat.

Aledo Black posted a two-day score of 637 to best runner-up Wichita Falls Rider by 40 strokes. Both teams will compete in the 5A Region 1 Tournament at Texas Tech’s Rawls Golf Course in Lubbock April 19-20. From there, the top three teams and top three individuals not on those teams will advance to the state tournament at White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown May 22-23.

Last season both the Bearcats and Ladycats sent a team to state.

Braylon Mahanay’s 2-over-par 146 (72-74) captured top overall medalist honors for Aledo Black, with teammate Dylan’s 155 (75-80) taking second.

Aledo Orange placed third, shooting 695 (340-355). They were led by Ethan Elmore, who shot 167 (81-86) for eighth overall individually.

The Bearcats Black led by 25 strokes after the opening day, shooting a 312 to Rider’s 337. While Aledo’s score increased to 325 on Day 2, Rider increased to a 340.

Aledo had four players finish in the top 10 medalists and earn all-district honors, with Jett Moore taking seventh with a 165 (80-85) and Grayson Freeman of the Orange squad placing 10th with a 170 (81-89).

“Its great to win district. It’s a goal that we wanted to accomplish as a program for the boys and girls teams,” coach Brian Mourning said. “We had an opportunity to get our Orange teams out, but a few other teams in the district got us on Day Two. I can’t wait to get back up to Lubbock and compete against two good teams in our district.”

Just like the boys, the Ladycats Orange was third in district. However, unlike regionals, only the top two teams and top two individuals not on those teams advance. The Granbury Purple team finished second among the girls.

Earlier last week, the Ladycats had five all-district honors with Kyla Morales, Sana’a Lemen, Emily Crick, Mallory Miller and Madi Warner.

The Aledo Orange boys’ scores also include Helton Mossiello, 178 (89-89); Logan Ban, 180 (89-91); and Cade Moore, 194 (94-100).

The four lowest individual scores in each round comprise the team score.
