The Aledo Bearcats began the 2022 fall season by once again competing in one of the nation’s elite high school golf tournaments, the Bart Granger Memorial Memorial at Pecan Valley near Benbrook.

The tournament, which regularly draws teams from across the country, has a unique 54-hole format. Teams play 36 holes on the opening day, Friday, and come back for a final 18 on Saturday.

The Bearcats Varsity Black posted a team score of 919 to place 18th out of 52 teams. They opened with rounds of 298 and 305 before finishing with a 316.

“The guys played well in the Bart Granger, finishing 18th out of 52 teams in a very stacked field,” said first-year coach Brian Mourning. “Jett Moore (70-74-76) and Braylon Mahanay (71-73-76) played really well. Logan Ban also played well in the 54-hole event. Jake Phillips and Grayson Freeman also did a good job competing in a tough field.”

The Aledo JV boys golf team composed of Cade Moore, Johnnie Reed, Madox Jessup, and Noah Graham participated in the Fall 15 at Nutcracker Golf Course in Pecan Plantation and finished first, with Graham second and Moore third individually.

Along with 220 scores posted by Moore and Mahanay, Ban shot a 236 (78-77-81), Phillips came in with a 246 (79-81-86) and Freeman had a 253 (85-85-83).

The history of the tournament goes back more than four decades and was originally the Fort Worth Parks and Recreation Tournament. Then, it became the Dr Pepper/Paschal Invitational in 1997, a name that would, unfortunately, only last for a couple of weeks.

After his Paschal Panthers won the tourney in 1997, one of the leaders of that team, Granger, was killed in an automobile accident on Oct. 10 of 1997. The tournament was then renamed in his honor.

The Aledo Varsity Orange team will compete in the Marcus Tournament at Tour 18 in Flower Mound on Wednesday, Sept. 28. The Varsity Black will return to action Oct. 6-8 at the Jay Brewer Memorial in Texarkana. Both squads will then compete in the District 5-5A Preview Oct. 11 at Sugartree Golf Course in Lipan.
