Event honors late former Granbury golfer

The Aledo Bearcats Varsity Orange team competed in the Briggs Berry Memorial tournament at Pecan Plantation in Granbury on Oct. 7. The tournament is named after the late former Pirate golfer who passed away as a teenager in 2014 following his battle with an immune deficiency.

The Bearcats finished tied for eighth out of 14 teams, shooting a team score of 352. Granbury Purple won the tournament with a 302, with Brock taking second with a 317.

Maddox Jessup led Aledo with an 82, tying for 11th individually in a field of 82 golfers. Right behind him was William Kirkman with an 83.

Also for Aledo, Brian Yarbrough posted an 88, with Evan Boukaden and Andrew Todoy coming in with a 99 each. The four lowest individual scores comprise the team score.

“Pecan is a very tough course. We struggled in keeping the ball in the fairway,” Bearcats coach Brian Mourning said. “We got in some trouble off the tees some and that led to some bad holes.

“We will get back to work on correcting our mistakes. Proud of how the kids handled the course and are willing to get better.”

Varsity Orange will be back in action, along with Varsity Black, on Tuesday, Oct. 22 in the District 5-5A Preview at Cross Timbers Golf Course in Azle. Before then, Varsity Black will compete in the Granbury Invitational at DeCordova Bend Country Club and Harbor Lakes Golf Course on Oct. 18.

All Aledo boys and girls golf programs will compete in the program’s annual Bearcat Brawl fundraiser on Oct. 27 at Split Rail Golf Club in Aledo.
