The Aledo Bearcats claimed three out of four games in their third-place outing at the Weatherford Tournament, earning victories over Everman (60-42), Arlington Lamar (64-44) and Nolan Catholic (52-42) while the Bearcats’ lone loss came in a 45-42 defeat to Colleyville Heritage.
Senior guard Enrique Pacheco netted 14 points against Everman, scored 10 points against Colleyville Heritage and had 19 versus Arlington Lamar. Across four games, Caden Cunngham recorded 32 points, and Townes Van Huysen totaled 66 points in an impressive all-around performance. Dylan Pipkins tossed in eight points against both Colleyville Heritage and Nolan Catholic while Josiah Jenkins recorded eight points in the 20-point win over Arlington Lamar.
Meanwhile, the Aledo Ladycats continued their quality play against tough competition through the start of the winter season. The Ladycats recently hosted the Moritz Dealerships Ladycat Basketball Invitational from Dec. 4-6 and finished in fourth place after a 2-2 finish.
Aledo opened the tournament with a 56-30 win over Snyder, and three Ladycats scored in double figures in Tiara Butler (15), Brooklyn Dempsey (10) and Elizabeth Griffin (10). The Ladycats claimed victory in dominant fashion in their second contest, a 74-48 triumph over Everman. Griffin led the charge with a game-high 24 points in that contest while Dempsey and Butler finished with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Jaylee Owens and Kate Jackson contributed well with nine and seven points, respectively.
In the next two games, Aledo fell to Duncanville (47-33) and Tascosa (49-28). Butler, who was named to the All-Tournament First Team, led the way in both losses with 13 points against Duncanville and 12 versus Tascosa. Additionally, Griffin – a Saint Mary’s-commit – was named to the All-Tournament Second Team.
Following their tournament, the Ladycats opened district play hosting their nemesis, the Brewer Lady Bears, Friday night and exorcised past demons with a dominant performance. The Ladycats stifled Brewer from the opening tip, suffocating the Lady Bears with stingy defense and wearing them down with fast-paced offense en route to a 67-20 victory.
Jackson led her team scoring with 15 points while Griffin tallied 14. Butler finished the night with eight points while Sarah Edwards and Kennedy Cardenas had seven apiece. The Ladycats made it a program sweep as the JV (58-7) and freshman (62-9) teams posted blowout wins over Brewer as well. Sunny Rosado led the JV squad with 15 points while Ally Lucas netted 12 points to lead the freshman team.
The Bearcats (12-5) played at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial ahead of their district opener at 6 p.m. Friday at Chisholm Trail. The Ladycats (11-5, 1-0) will resume district play at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Chisholm Trail.
