The Trinity Christian Eagles, ranked No. 8 in the state in TAPPS Class 4A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, faced a tough TAPPS District 1-4A foe in the form of their rivals Tuesday night.
The Eagles faced off against the No. 4 Lake Country Christian School Eagles in a high-level clash. Trinity eliminated a six-point deficit with a late flurry in the final minute of regulation – capped off by a tying bucket with 40 seconds left by Cole Massey, a big defensive stop, and two clutch free throws from senior Sam Carson. In the end, TCA emerged victorious in the second overtime period by a final score of 77-66.
TCA (23-5, 4-0 in district) entered halftime with a narrow 33-31 advantage but lost the lead entering the fourth quarter after getting outscored by four. LCCS had steadily increased its narrow margin throughout the fourth until TCA’s late surge ended regulation with the teams deadlocked at 54-all.
Carson led the way with 17 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals while Reed Robbins added 16 points, eight rebounds and two assists. John Chrane and Massey combined for 31 points while Chrane also had six assists.
The high-flying Eagles won the crucial league clash to remain atop the district standings with an unblemished record.
