Behind the clutch pitching of Luke Sandefur the Aledo Bearcats’ season continues.

Sandefur took the mound to pitch the third winner-take-all game in Aledo’s Class 5A Division I bi-district series against Birdville Saturday, May 3, at Birdville High School. He responded with a 6-0 shutout victory that advanced the District 5-5A champion Bearcats (25-7) to the second round, where they will face another perennial power, District 7-5A champion Fort Worth Arlington Heights (22-8-1).

The second round series will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8 in Aledo. before shifting to Fort Worth for Game 2 on Friday, May 9, also at 7:30 p.m. A third game, if necessary, will be played Saturday, May 10 at noon at Saginaw High School.

The Bearcats enter the game ranked No. 7 in the state by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Sandefur hurled 6.2 innings, surrendering three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Ethan Hodo came on to get the final out.

After the Bearcats won the opening game 2-0 at home on Thursday, May 1, the Hawks (12-20), the fourth-place team from 6-5A, evened the series with a 2-0 win at home the next night.

In the deciding game, Dylan Duran led the Aledo offense with three hits. He drove in three runs, walked, and stole a base.

Luke Trager also had two hits, while Lucas Nawrocki doubled with a RBI and stolen base and Nick Foster tripled.

In the opening victory for the Bearcats, Grayson McKelvey tossed a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts and one walk over seven innings. He was supported by Nawrocki’s three hits and RBI, Landon Barnes’ solo home run and Luke Gladchuck’s double.

In a yeoman effort in Game 2, Devin Miller pitched six innings, giving up five hits, two earned runs with five strikeouts and two walks. Brennon Evans had a pair of hits that included a triple and Brooks Burdine doubled.

Heights advanced by sweeping Cleburne in bi-district, 7-0 and 10-0.
