Aledo sweeps at Mineral Wells meet

Posted

The Aledo varsity Bearcats and Ladycats ran away with the championship of the Mineral Wells Ram Invitational on Friday, Sept. 9. Meanwhile, the junior varsity boys also claimed first.

And while they didn’t field a complete team, the JV girls had four finishers individually in the top 10.

The course was a little longer than the traditional high school cross country course for both boys and girls. The boys’ course was almost 3.5 miles, compared to the usual 5,000 kilometers, or 3.1 miles. The girls, who normally run 5K, were set to run 2 miles in this race, but instead the course was closer to 2.25 miles.

“Although the course was long, all athletes competed extremely well. It was truly an amazing day!” exclaimed head coach Mike Pinkerton. “So proud of these athletes – not only the way they compete, but also the way they train.”

The JV boys, in fact, posted a perfect score of 15 with the top five individuals taking places 1-5 (team scores are comprised of the five top individual performances). The varsity boys came close with 19 points, having the top four finishers.

The Ladycats finished with 35 points and four of the top eight finishers.

Leading the varsity boys was Jack Fink, the overall individual winner with a time of 17 minutes, 55.14 seconds. Vincent Luffey was second in 18:31.24. He was followed by Dominick Barrera, third, 19:05.71; Henry Zedler, fourth, 19:09.62; and Luke Schabel was 10th in 20:09.04.

Molly Garrison led the varsity girls, taking first individually in 12 minutes, 13.55 seconds. Sophia Brandenburg was third in 12:41.58, followed by Elizabeth Griffin, sixth, 13:04.09; Sidney Tillotson, eighth, 13:07.44; and Aubrey Connelly, 22nd, 14:02.67.

Leading the JV boys was James Price, first, 20:17.40; Daniel Stephens, second, 20:32.21; Bo Merrill, third, 21:56.96; Chad Thomas, fourth, 22:05.04; and Lincoln Tuin, fifth, 22:19.16. Also in the top 20 were Ian Robbins, 13th, 23:40.04; Isaac Price, 15th, 24:04.04; and Christian Flores, 19th, 24:20.97.

Caroline Browning posting the top time among Aledo JV girls, finishing in 14:36.30. Right behind in third was Emily Lewis, 14:47.85; followed by Sadie Williams, fifth, 15:00.89; and Catie Weimer, ninth, 15:38.85.

The Aledo squads are back in action Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Paschal Invitational. The meet will be held at the Athletic Performance Ranch.
