Aledo offers resources to save water and money for Smart irrigation Month

July is Smart Irrigation Month, and the City of Aledo reminds customers that more than 50% of landscape water may be wasted due to overwatering, inefficient watering practices, and broken or poorly maintained irrigation systems. Minimal rainfall in July means Parker County is experiencing abnormally dry conditions. 

Adhering to Aledo’s watering schedule and following these simple steps can help customers save water and money:  

• Apply no more than an inch of water to your lawn per week during the summer. That will encourage deeper root systems and healthier grass.
• Turn off sprinklers when it’s rainy or windy. Watch the forecast and turn off irrigation systems during and after rainfall.
• Cycle and soak. Instead of one long watering session, water in a couple of short cycles (5-6 minutes each) with an hour in between.
• Add a smart controller that automatically adjusts the sprinkler system based on watering restrictions and weather. 
• Estimate irrigation usage with Fort Worth Water’s calculator tool that shows how many gallons are used for every minute a sprinkler station runs for multiple days during the week.

Aledo offers the free “My Water Advisor” tool to help customers monitor how much water they are using and when. Customers can even customize alerts for water usage and potential leaks. The city has a detailed user guide and a short demonstration video to walk customers through the process of registering and using this tool. 

Customers may also sign up to receive free weekly watering advice at www.waterisawesome.com for watering recommendations based on actual precipitation in the area. The Tarrant Regional Water District also offers several free resources, guides, and classes at www.savetarrantwater.com.
