Aledo ISD: Student journalists win Gold Crown

Visit New York to claim award

After being nominated for the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) crown award recognizing excellent student publications, the Aledo High School yearbook staff received the highest award given: A golden crown. Aledo became one of 16 schools in the nation to receive this award for their 2023-2024 yearbook “It’s Just What We Do.”

Aledo’s yearbook editorial board attended the 101st Annual Spring Convention at Columbia University in New York City on March 19-21, where there were 240 different speakers and sessions students could choose to attend.

“We did not think we were ever going to make it to New York and be qualified for a gold crown,” senior design editor Corah Satterfield said. “It was a dream. I felt very proud, it was very encouraging to see our staff get so excited and know that we’re one out of 16 schools.”

When she learned nominations were being announced, senior content editor Ella Flowers was the first to know.

“You have to go into this organization knowing that you won't get the feeling of satisfaction or gratification until a year after the work you put in,” Flowers said. “This was the first book that I felt I put a lot of work into. This year I understand the significance of what it means.”

Although not part of the yearbook, CTE coordinator Tim Rogers helped coordinate the trip.

“I was honored to be able to go behind the curtain and see not only what it required to even be selected for that award but to win a gold,” Rogers said. “It’s like an Emmy, you literally are the best of the best.”

Disclosure: Madison Cook is a member of the AHS yearbook staff that was honored in New York.
