The Ladycats won at home against the Lady Panthers 10-0 after six innings played before traveling to play the Rough Riders and winning 20-0 after only three innings.
Aledo came into the home game against Fossil Ridge with a 2-0 district record, with shutout wins against Brewer and Chisholm Trail. The Lady Panthers were 3-0 in district, with close wins against Granbury, Azle, and Brewer. Despite the similar records, the Ladycats showed the disparity between the two teams.
After a scoreless top of the first, Aledo got on the board quick. Delaney Rosser led off and got hit by a pitch. Tempe Perry laid down a bunt. Thanks to an error on the throw, it not only allowed Rosser to come in and score, but Perry as well.
Kyleigh Pawlak then hit a double followed by a later steal at third base. Brooklynn Taloa then hit a ground ball to the pitcher who committed an error and allowed Pawlak to score.
Rylee Marx hit into a fielder’s choice out followed by a strikeout when Brylee Gray came up to bat. Gray’s fly ball to right field resulted in an error that allowed Marx to come around and score and Gray to reach third base. The right fielder made up for it by catching the next fly ball towards her for out three, but Aledo led 4-0 after the first inning.
The second inning was scoreless for both teams despite the Ladycats getting two runners on base. The third inning saw Aledo load the bases up with one out when Jordyn Edington hit a bases-clearing double. Two batters later, she was driven in by an RBI single from Perry. Pawlak followed by driving in Perry with a double to make it 9-0 for the Ladycats.
The fourth inning Aledo was able to get its first two batters on base. Marx hit a single and Kayleigh Martin followed with a double. Unfortunately, the Ladycats were not able to get either of the two home.
The fifth inning saw little success with bats for either team. Perry was rolling on the mound by this time for Aledo, having not allowed a baserunner since the second inning. Unfortunately, the Ladycat bats remained tamed for at least one more inning as the game moved to the sixth inning.
With two outs, Gray hit a single to spark a rally for Aledo. She advanced to second base due to a passed ball where Breleigh Mayer drove her in with a single. The run ended the game due to run-rule, the Ladycats winning 10-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Edington led the team with three RBIs while Perry, Pawlak, Taloa, and Mayer each had one. The team finished with 11 hits in the game.
On the mound, Perry finished with a no-hitter after pitching six innings and striking out eight and walking three.
Myers was surprised after the game with a banner, with the win marking her 250th win as a head coach.
“I don’t keep up with that kind of stuff,” Myers said. “When they brought (the banner) out I was genuinely shocked. I thought they were going to dump water out on me for whatever reason like we are in the playoffs.”
Myers chalked it up to the great players she has gotten to coach at Aledo in her now 11th season as head of the Ladycats.
“It’s awesome they keep up with that for me because I don’t even think about it,” Myers said. “I am one game to the next.”
The blowout win was matched a few days later when Aledo traveled to Saginaw. The Rough Riders were 1-2 in district and were coming off run-rule losses to Brewer and Azle. The biggest battle for the Ladycats in the game was the cold, windy weather as well as contemplation, but they smashed through both obstacles.
Aledo loaded the bases for Taloa who hit a ball into left field to drive in a run, but a runner was thrown out at third base. Following a pop out for out two and a walk loaded the bases again, Kellyn Overturff hit a ground ball to second base that resulted in an error. Two more runs scored for the Ladycats.
Kennedy Cardenas followed with an RBI single and Jordyn Edington an RBI double. Rosser then drove in both base runners with a double and Perry came after to drive her in with a single to make it eight runs for Aledo in the first inning before Saginaw had even gotten to bat yet.
The defense did get two base runners on with Marx giving up a single and a walk, but she closed the inning with a strikeout to keep runs off the board.
Taloa led off the second inning with a triple. Marx drove her in with a single. Martin drove her in with a single followed by an error that allowed her to reach third base. Overturff then drove her in with a single as well.
Following a strikeout, Edington drew a walk and later went to steal second base. The throw resulted in an error allowed Overturff and Edington to reach third base. Two batters later, Edington was able to score on a passed ball to increase Aledo’s lead to 13-0.
The Rough Riders were able to get one runner on with a drawn walk in the same inning. She later went to steal second base and while initially called safe, she took her foot off the bag while standing up and was still getting tagged by the Ladycat’s Gigi Martinez for out three.
In the third inning, Aledo needed to score only two more runs to get above the 15-run limit to spark an early run-rule victory. With Saginaw batting second, the Ladycats were able to keep scoring long past the time they went past 15 runs.
Marx led off with a single, but a fielding error in the outfield allowed her to make it to third base. Martin then drove her in with a single. Following another single from Overturff, Cardenas drove another run in with a single. Following a walk from Edington that loaded the bases and a strikeout, Autumn Gudel came in and hit an RBI single.
Following an infield fly ball for out two, Taloa hit her second triple of the game, clearing the bases for three more runs to come aboard. Marx was back up to bat and her fly ball to right field resulted in an error and Taloa scored to make it 20-0 before the next batter flew out for out three.
Despite a leadoff double for Saginaw, Marx and the defense recovered by striking out the next batter and forcing a harmless pop up to second base for out two. The final out was a doozy, with a pop fly to third base being dropped for Aledo’s only fielding error of the game. The ball was thrown home where catcher Martin just tagged the runner out to secure the shutout for Marx and end the game.
The Ladycats won 20-0.
Taloa led the team with four RBIs and hit two triples. Rosser and Cardenas both had two RBIs followed by six players who all had one RBI each. Aledo finished with 15 hits and drew six walks while taking advantage of five fielding errors from Saginaw that resulted in eight runs coming unearned.
Marx gave up no runs on two hits while striking out four and walking two batters.
Myers was most proud of her team for their attitudes during a game that was not competitive as well as conditions that were both cold and windy.
“I didn’t hear a lot of complaining in the dugout about the cold so that’s good,” Myers said. “Usually that is what we battle during games like this. Being grumpy about the weather and I didn’t hear so I’m proud of them for that. It was a good opportunity for those who don’t get many reps in to get some so we got to see some of that to see how they react to different types of pitching.”
Aledo is scheduled to finish up the first round of district at 7 p.m. on March 24 at Azle.
