With a light roster, the Aledo Bearcat and Ladycat wrestlers competed in the Lamar Invitational at Lamar High School in Arlington on Saturday, Jan. 4.

For the Bearcats, Brady Powell posted the highest finish of the day, placing third in the 175-pound division. Right behind was Cameron Robbins, who took fourth in the 106 weight class.

The Ladycats were led by Ari Mathias, who won two matches and lost two to place in the top six in the 145 weight class.

As a team, the Bearcats were 17th out of the field of 37. The Ladycats only sent three wrestlers to the tournament.

“Both varsity teams wrestled well in a tough Lamar tournament. I think we are growing every match and continuing to improve our wrestling,” first-year Aledo coach Ben Shaw said. “We lost a few close matches, but we were in every match.

“We are young, but the athletes are competing hard. We are moving in the right direction and looking to peak in February. I am excited for the next three weeks as we approach districts. We are sharpening our skills and continuing to increase our wrestling ability each day.”

The Bearcats and Ladycats were wrestling in a tri-match at Azle against Azle and Keller Fossil Ridge at press time. On Wednesday, Jan. 15, they travel to Springtown for another tri-match against Springtown and Chisholm Trail starting at 6 p.m.

Their next tournament is Saturday, Jan. 18, when they travel to Saginaw Chisholm Trail for the Tussle at the Trail.

Aledo’s next and final home match of the season will be on Wednesday, Jan. 22, when they host Brewer for Senior Night at 6 p.m. Then comes the District 4-5A Tournament in Fort Worth on Feb. 1.
