After making history several weeks earlier by being in the best in Texas, recent Aledo High School graduate Avery Green came close to being the best internationally among clinical nursing students.
Green won the Texas championship in the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA), the first student from Aledo ever to accomplish the feat. That qualified her to advance to international HOSA competition July 18-21 in Nashville, where she placed second.
Her HOSA competition is clinical nursing. In it, participants are judged on their knowledge and skills of work a nurse performs every day.
For the international competition, she took a test that measured her nursing and general medical knowledge. From there, she advanced as part of the top 20 internationally.
After she advanced, Green competed in Round 2, which was skills based and required competitors to perform sterile wound irrigation, and donning and doffing (putting on and removing) personal protective equipment.
“Overall, I felt that I did very strongly on the testing section, and I think I did well on the skills section, although I will admit I did not perform as well as I would have hoped,” Green said.
Suffice to say, many would disagree as there was, after all, only one place higher than her in the entire world.
“The conference itself was an amazing experience, especially getting to interact and meet so many different people,” Green continued. “I had also never been to Nashville, and we got to experience all that the city has to offer, so I was incredibly grateful for that opportunity.
“We went down to Broadway Street and saw some live music, which was a lot of fun. We also got to go to the Country Music Hall of Fame, and the competition was at the Opryland Gaylord, so we got to check it out, which was really cool.”
Also earlier this year, Green earned her Certified Clinical Medical Assistant License through the health science pathway at Aledo. She plans to attend Oklahoma State University in the fall to major in animal science.
Both of her parents are teachers, and she has aunts and uncles involved in the healthcare industry.
