Owners Ellen and Lee Greer donate all the delicious, organic vegetables they produce to local public aid organizations, including Parker County Center of Hope in Weatherford. Food banks normally cannot provide fresh, healthy produce to their clients and the farm has been meeting that need near the Clear Fork of the Trinity River since 2020.
Lee Greer said the 48-foot plastic covered greenhouse will give the farm the ability to extend their growing season and increase the wholesome bounty they donate.
The men’s ministry has taken on tasks at the farm in the past and wherever they find a need in the community. Coordinator Mayo Tubbs said they learn of single mothers, widows, and anyone who needs assistance, often repairing homes, fixing cars, and aiding families.
“We build, help and improve wherever there is a need,” Tubbs explained as he gathered brush to burn and make way for the greenhouse project. “This is a way to give back. My guys are wired to help.”
Tubbs said some of the about 130 members have expertise to offer in mechanics, plumbing, electronics, or carpentry, while others are willing to roll up their sleeves and do whatever it takes to make a difference.
After clearing and measuring the area, stakes were driven into the ground to erect the 16-foot wide metal skeleton that holds the sturdy plastic covering. Sunlight through the plastic will warm and encourage produce to grow deep into the fall season. After the work was completed, some volunteers celebrated by joining Ellen Greer in picking black eyed peas ready for harvesting. Other crops donated from the farm include okra, tomatoes, lettuce, beets, potatoes, radishes and artichokes.
The farm relies heavily on volunteers and fall is the busiest time of year because so much has to be harvested in a short time. Donations can be made to the 501(c)3 non-profit or you can bend a back and help harvest while nibbling fresh produce and learning about organic gardening from the Greers.
