Parenting classes offered

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service of Parker County will offer parenting classes Monday and Wednesday, Sept. 29 and Oct. 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Parker County Agricultural Services Center. The classes will be $10 per person for the two day class and will include lunch.
The parenting classes will use the curriculum “Becoming A Love and Logic Parent” by Jim Fay and Charles Fay. The curriculum will cover Raising Responsible Kids, The Love and Logic Formula, C Stands for Control, Ownership of the Problem, Thinking and Decision Making, and Consequences. Also covered in the classes will be Keeping Children Healthy, Food Safety and Shopping Strategies for Healthy Eating.

Pesticide training set

To comply with current pesticide handling laws, those who use certain pesticides must receive training on the proper use, storage, and disposal of these chemicals. A license is required of anyone who purchases and/or applies a restricted-use or state-limited use pesticide for the production of an agricultural commodity. Restricted-use pesticides are classified by the Environmental Protection Agency. The Texas Department of Agriculture classifies state-limited use pesticides. Product labels indicate restricted-use pesticides, while state regulations list state-limited use chemicals.
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service provides private applicator introductory courses that can prepare applicators to qualify for a license by passing a test. Anyone wishing to become a licensed private applicator can attend a training Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the Parker County Extension office, 604 North Main, Weatherford. The training program is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. An 80-page private applicator training manual and a copy of the current pesticide and herbicide laws and regulations are available at the Extension office for $40 (cash or check). It is recommended that these be purchased prior to the day of the training to begin familiarizing with the material. There is an additional $10 fee (cash or check) the day of the training.

Money management class planned

Parker County will conduct a two-hour personal financial management class “Managing Your Money” Thursday, Sept. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Parker County Agricultural Services Class at 604 North Main Street in Weatherford. The class is for anyone interested in how to better manage money, but it also for people who are in bankruptcy Chapter 7 and/or 13. The intent of the course is to increase financial knowledge and skills, topics everyone filing for bankruptcy needs to know. The topics covered will include Developing a Spending Plan, Money Management, Wise Use of Credit and Consumer information.

Marriage class offered

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service of Parker County will host a “Twogether in Texas” Marriage Education class Friday, Sept. 5 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m at the Parker County Agricultural Services Center and is free of charge.
After completing the class, couples will receive a certificate that can be taken to the county clerk to save $60 on a marriage license. Also, couples will not have to wait 72 hours to be married. The waiting period is waived for couples who complete the course.
The class focuses on helping couples develop communication and conflict resolution skills and other tools for building strong relationships.

4-H plans extravaganza

Parker County 4-H Extravaganza will be held Monday, Aug. 18 from 6-8 p.m. at the
Parker County Extension Office, 604 N. Main Street in Weatherford.
This fun-filled event is open to everyone. Enroll in your 4-H club for the 2014-15 4-H year. Meet new people and catch up with old friends. Food and beverages will be provided. There will be fun activities for all. Invite your friends.

Drought-tolerant landscaping class

The Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service of Parker County, in cooperation with the Parker County Master Gardeners, will conduct a workshop entitled Creating and Maintaining a Healthy, Drought-Tolerant and Sustainable Landscape.
The class will be held at the Parker County Extension Office at 604 N. Main Street, Suite 200, Saturday, Aug. 16 from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. With the ever-increasing restrictions on water use in Parker County, there is a need for all of us to develop landscapes that rely on less water use and conserve other resources. This class will cover designing a sustainable landscape, appropriate use of water, taking care of soil, selecting appropriate hardy and drought-tolerant plants, and conserving natural resources through responsible fertilization and integrated pest management.
To attend the class, the charge is $10. The fee will cover the costs of handouts, refreshments and lunch. For more information about the water conservation class, contact the Parker County Extension Office at 817-598-6168. Pre-registration is requested by Aug. 12.

Mammograms screenings scheduled

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service – Parker County will host a Moncrief Cancer Breast Screening Wednesday, Aug. 6 in Weatherford at the Parker County Agricultural Service Center, 604 North Main St. The screenings will take place from 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m. The mammograms are fully funded for women without insurance. Medicare and most insurances will be accepted.
Screening is recommended for women age 35 and older. The mobile unit is designed for routine screening only. Those who have had any breast problems should contact their physician.

Parenting classes scheduled

Texas AgriLife Extension Service of Parker County will offer parenting classes Aug. 19 and 21 at the Parker County Agricultural Services Center. The classes will be from 1-5 p.m. each day and will include lunch. The cost to attend the class is $10 per person for the two-day class. Scholarships are available.
The parenting classes will use the curriculum “Screamfree Parenting: The Revolutionary Approach to Raising Your Kids by Keeping Your Coo,l” a series by Dr. Hal Edward Runkel. Lessons will focus on how to become the parent your kids need by keeping your cool. Also covered in the classes will be a presentation on Feeding Your Children, Food Safety and Shopping Strategies for Healthy Eating.

Youth sewing camp planned

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Parker County is offering a youth sewing camp from 9 a.m.-noon, Aug. 5-7 at the Parker County Agricultural Service Center, 604 N. Main Street in Weatherford.
The camp is for youth 8-18 year old and will include basic sewing skills. Participants will work on and take home a variety of projects. Fabric and supplies will be provided for the sewing projects. Campers will need to bring a working sewing machine (there will be a few supplied), scissors, pins, needles and a seam ripper.
Cost of the three-day camp is $40 per participant. Space is limited. Registration deadline is July 30.

After the training class, the Texas Department of Agriculture will contact applicants with instructions on how to schedule a test. Licenses expire in five years but can be renewed by obtaining 15 Continuing Education Units during that period.
